Did You Know: An Australian Man Once Tried To Sell New Zealand On eBay
The year was 2006. It was a simpler time, and the world was a much simpler place.
The internet was far more fun and ridiculous, before Facebook’s 2007 launch started its downward spiral.
An Australian man from Brisbane, who had visited New Zealand a grand total of one time, put the country up for sale on eBay.
The listing’s starting bid was a mere $0.01 - a genuine bargain - with its key selling points including “very ordinary weather.”
The price quickly rose, and after 22 bids it had climbed to a much more respectable $3,000.
eBay finally shut down the auction, claiming it breached their policies, and stating: “Clearly New Zealand is not for sale.”
They said it was: “one of the stupidest items that had ever been on the online marketplace”.
Winston Peters, New Zealand’s foreign minister, said: “I don’t think it’s funny. It is nonsensical stupidity.”
Peters would later go on to serve as New Zealand’s deputy prime minister. Australian men would later go on to further acts of nonsensical stupidity.
